Mexican director and screenwriter recognized for his solid career in documentary cinema. His works have been showcased at prestigious international festivals and he has received support from programs such as Jóvenes Creadores (FONCA), EFICINE, FOCINE, Ford, Bertha Foundation, Luminate Group, the Berlinale Talent Campus, and Doculab at the Guadalajara Film Festival. His debut film “Los truenos de San Juan” (2017) was selected at over fifteen international festivals and won Best Documentary at the San Diego Latino Film Festival, among other awards and mentions.
With more than a dozen short films and four feature-length films directed and produced, he led the documentary department at La Corriente del Golfo for four years. In television, he co-directed the special “Pan y Circo: Discriminar en español” (2022) for Amazon Prime and “Reasonable Doubt: A Story of Two Kidnappings” (2021), a Netflix original that uncovered abuses of power in the Mexican penal system and led to the release of three men wrongfully imprisoned. He also directed both seasons of the mini-series “El Tema” (2021–2022), hosted by Gael García Bernal and Yásnaya Aguilar, a stark declaration on climate change in Mexico.
His most recent documentary “Estado de silencio” (2024), produced by Diego Luna, screened at more than twenty international festivals, winning multiple awards, including Best Film at SANFIC, Chile and Best Documentary at the Red Sea IFF in Saudi Arabia; and is now available on Netflix.
Beyond directing, Maza has served as a jury member, advisor, and workshop leader in over seventeen festivals and film industry spaces worldwide, sharing his expertise and fostering new talent. He continues to develop projects that explore social, political, and cultural themes, solidifying his role as a prominent voice in Latin American and global cinema.
