Renowned Mexican director and screenwriter, recognized for his solid career in documentary filmmaking. Throughout his career, his work has been showcased at prestigious international festivals, positioning him as a relevant voice in contemporary cinema.
He has received support from various institutions promoting cinematic creation, including the FONCA Young Creators program, EFICINE, FOCINE, Ford, Bertha Foundation, Luminate Group, the Berlinale Talent Campus, and Doculab at the Guadalajara International Film Festival, among others.
His debut feature, The Thunder Feast (2017), was selected in more than fifteen international festivals and and won Best Documentary at the San Diego Latino Film Festival, along with multiple other recognitions.
Having directed and produced more than a dozen shorts and four feature films, he led the Unscripted department at La Corriente del Golfo for four years. In television, he co-directed Pan y Circo’s special “Discrimination in Spanish” (2022) for Amazon and Reasonable Doubt: A Tale of Two Kidnappings (2021), a Netflix original that depicts the abuse of power within the Mexican penal system, and that led to the release of the wrongfully incarcerated victims. He also directed both seasons of the mini-series The Issue (2021-2022), hosted by Gael Garcia Bernal and Yásnaya Aguilar in this unreserved portrait about climate change.
His latest documentary, State of Silence (2024), produced by Diego Luna, has been selected at more than 20 international festivals and earning multiple awards, including Best Film at SANFIC in Chile and Best Documentary at at the Red Sea IFF in Saudi Arabia.
Maza has served as a jury member, mentor, and workshop tutor at more than 17 festivals and film industry events worldwide, sharing his expertise and supporting emerging talent. Currently, he continues to develop projects that delve into social, political, and cultural themes, reaffirming his position as an outstanding voice in Latin American and international cinema.
